A 420-unit apartment community is in the works at the corner of Seaboard Street and Michigan Avenue in Fort Myers, the first of its kind in an area that has laid dormant for many years.
This project is also the first to be approved in the newly created Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard redevelopment area. The new redevelopment area was created last year when the Dunbar-Michigan and Velasco Village redevelopment areas were nixed to combine them with the MLK district. Project developers believe it will help revitalize the east side of Fort Myers by bringing needed apartments to an area close to downtown Fort Myers.
The Community Redevelopment Agency is a special district in which future property values are used for economic development within the district, according to the Florida Redevelopment Association.
The agency’s advisory board approved the project, known as Seaboard Waterside Apartments, last week. The next step is to seek approval from its Board of Commissioners, made up of Fort Myers city council members.
