REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Economic Development Specialist
General Description
The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform high level advanced professional work performing a wide range of business and economic development tasks, as well as activities related to community redevelopment. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. This position will remain open until a sufficient number of applications have been received.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, public administration, economics, urban planning, law or related field.
Requires two (2) years in economic development including international experience or closely related experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
None.
Preferences:
The successful candidate will have considerable knowledge of economic forecasting tools and regional input-output modeling software such as RIMS II, IMPLAN and REMI. Candidate must also have the ability to prepare highly technical reports for
consumption by county administration, elected officials, community stakeholders, and partners.
- Research and develop long term objectives, strategies and approaches to urban redevelopment and revitalization, business incentives and economic impact, assess the tax revenue and economic impacts of redevelopment/revitalization projects and business relocation and expansions in Broward County.
- Research, compile, analyze and interpret data on economic conditions in Broward County including occupational employment statistics, wage information, labor supply and demand, tax revenues and County gross domestic product, providing detailed
reports of the research. - Analyze and present data related to economic and labor conditions.
- Research and compile international trade data and assess the tax and economic impact of trade between Broward County and key international markets.
- Assists in the implementation of economic development plans, initiatives and grant projects, including investigation of economic development grant opportunities and research support for grant applications.
- Serve as staff liaison to Broward County’s municipal economic development partners, providing assistance to facilitate efficient City/County relationships.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
- Provides one-on-one counseling and business assistance to Broward County entrepreneurs and small business; conducts on-site business visitations and meetings to identify needs and provide assistance.
- Researches industry sector economic data for reports and presentations; produces reports and presentations; speaks at various events; participates and attend industry conferences, meetings, conventions, and workshops.
- Participates in employee development and business assistance facilitator training courses.
- Serves as staff liaison to the business community providing assistance to facilitate efficient business/County relationships; coordinates a variety of activities related to business development, expansion and retention.
- Prepares, coordinates and monitors documents on new leases, renewals, amendments through execution; maintains Economic Development files/records.
- Researches and develops long term objectives, strategies and approaches to urban redevelopment and revitalization, business incentives and economic impact.
- Assists in the implementation of economic development plans, initiatives and grant projects; facilitates the completion of required procedural documentation to effectuate project completion.
- Monitors, evaluates and amends goals and action programs in the work plan to achieve stated objectives; conducts meetings/workshops with the business community; prepares and presents economic development plans and information.
- Performs related work as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Physical Demands
- Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

- Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Involves routine and frequent exposure to traffic; moving machinery.
