To be a code compliance officer requires a couple of key qualities — a sense of humor and a working knowledge of each and every code in the city of Destin. But to David Bazylak, a sense of humor might be most important. “It’s a complaint-driven type of profession,” Bazylak, who has worked in code compliance for over two months, said. “Some would say sometimes it’s thankless. Sometimes it’s just good to be able to laugh at some things.” Code compliance officers educate both residents and tourists on the city’s ordinances, codes and regulations related to parking, building codes, public nuisance, short and long term rentals, beach vendors and management, harbor and waterways, livery vessels, and others.
